All certified prompt engineers agree to uphold these principles. This code creates trust and accountability in our profession.

Seven Principles

The foundation of professional prompt engineering practice.

Principle 1

Protect the Public

Design prompts that prioritize user safety and prevent harm. Consider downstream effects of LLM outputs on individuals and society.

Principle 2

Act with Integrity

Be honest about prompt capabilities and limitations. Never misrepresent what an LLM system can or cannot do.

Principle 3

Maintain Security

Never knowingly create prompts that bypass safety controls. Report vulnerabilities responsibly. Build defense-in-depth systems.

Principle 4

Respect Privacy

Design systems that protect user data. Minimize data collection and retention. Implement appropriate access controls.

Principle 5

Stay Current

Continuously learn and adapt to evolving technology. Complete required continuing education. Keep skills relevant.

Principle 6

Share Knowledge

Contribute to the community's understanding. Mentor others. Publish research and best practices responsibly.

Principle 7

Acknowledge Limits

Know when to escalate or refuse. Don't take on work beyond your competence. Seek help when needed.

Enforcement

Violations are reviewed by an ethics committee with due process.

Warning

First offense for minor violations. Documented in member record.

Suspension

30-365 days for serious violations. Certification inactive during period.

Revocation

Permanent removal for egregious violations. Public notification.

Complaint Process

A fair and transparent process for handling ethics violations.

Filing a Complaint

  4. 4Committee issues finding and remedy

Appeals Process

  • 30 days to file appeal after decision
  • New evidence may be submitted
  • Independent review panel
